The Inspiration

In the early 1900s, pioneers from New England trekked down to the southeast coast of Florida to live on an island between the river and the sea. They called their community Riomar and spent paradisiacal summers on and off the water. Growing up on an island off of Florida, my idols were these local watermen: I admired their versatility and their effortless shift from a morning surf, to the office, to an afternoon spear fishing, to a family dinner of the fish shot earlier.

Riomar is a way of life. It’s that spot between the river and the sea. It’s a heading to follow while negotiating the ever-changing world around us. We've made a shoe to capture the Riomar spirit – and since we recognize the need to conserve our marine resources for future generations, we donate 5% of all profits to the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida.

The Technology

We design for those who demand more. Every detail serves a purpose. From our waterproof leathers to our breathable odorless lining; our antimicrobial insoles to our non-slip, non-marking outsoles; we’re setting a new standard in footwear – pioneering versatility through innovation.

We chose to manufacture in Portugal because of the country’s 800-year tradition of sailors and shoemakers. Our shoes are manufactured by Portugal's best, with the highest quality materials, then sent off to artisan women in nearby villages for final hand-stitching. It's this synergy of innovation and tradition that's paramount to everything that Riomar stands for.

Interchangeable Bearings

Our motto is, “Change your bearings, not your sole.” Our design allows you to easily change the look of your Riomar shoes through a variety of bearings that compliment any style. We offer custom embroidered designs and patterns in all of your favorite colors.

The bearings are made from 304 stainless steel, and the threaded pin design allows for a quick change on the same pair of shoes or to other Riomar models. This feature gives you a way not only to live creatively day-to-day, but also to save valuable space on board a boat or in your carry-on luggage.
