Chips and Salsa

Round up the crew for a trip to Mexico – or at least a game of make-believe while you celebrate Cinco de Mayo (while watching some golf, of course). We’ve got all you need to throw a party that’s just as memorable as that spring break you spent south of the border. Well, almost. Switch on the final round of this week's pro tournament and ¡divertirse!

The Food
Let’s get one thing straight: no one is ever mad at a bowl of guacamole. But if you want to take your appetizer game to the next level, kick things off with queso fundido, a crowd-pleasing chorizo-and-cheese dip you can make and serve in a cast-iron skillet.

For the finger foods, take a cue from Mexican street vendors and make tostadas. Buy pre-fried tortilla rounds (or fake your own by lightly brushing corn tortillas with oil and crisping them in the oven) and top with a smear of refried beans or guacamole. Add some shredded rotisserie chicken and pico de gallo, and you’ve got a perfect 3-bite snack for watching the pros swing their 3-woods.

For the main event, you’re going to want to taco. (Yes, it’s a verb.) To round out your spread with authentic Mexican flavors, opt for al pastor, a mix of marinated pork and pineapple you can make on the grill. Set out small bowls of shredded cheese, salsa, and sour cream, and you’ll definitely be named MVP of your crew.

The Drinks
Mix up the usual beer buzz with a couple of signature cocktails – you’re watching a tournament, not driving the cart, after all! If you really want to gain host points, offer guests two drink options: one sweet and one spicy. We suggest using mixers from Owl’s Brew to take the guesswork out of playing bartender.

The Par-garita
3oz Owl’s Brew Wicked Margarita mixer
1.5 oz tequila
Splash of lime juice

Simply salt the rim, shake, and pour. You’ll be back on the couch in no time.

Watch our newest Bar for the Course episode to see how to make the Par-garita at home.

The Fun
If you need a break from golf, might we suggest a different kind of swing: at the piñata, that beloved Mexican party pastime? Fill it with mini liquor bottles (plastic only, please), swap the traditional wooden stick for a golf club, and let out some aggression when your favorite player hits a bogey.

For a different kind of, ahem, fun, face off in a hot chili pepper eating contest. Dole out latex gloves (or their non-allergenic equivalent) and line up an assortment of peppers from mildest to hottest. Whoever makes their way furthest down the line wins – might we suggest upping the stakes to include the gang’s next round of drinks at the club?
