All About Divot Tools

By Tim Newcomb

That satisfying feeling of dropping a ball from the fairway – or the rough, for that matter – directly onto the green comes with a responsibility to repair the dent in the delicate turf. That’s why having a divot tool readily available serves as not only another opportunity to sport some stylish golf gear (although there is that, too), but also a chance to play your part in keeping your favorite course in pristine condition. Using a divot tool is the best way to make it happen.

A divot tool – often made of metal or plastic, with two prongs on one end – comes ready-made to get the job done. Need a tutorial? Using the two prongs, insert the tool just outside the small crater at a 45-degree angle. Then, apply pressure down and forward on the tool, pushing toward the middle of the mark to help fill in the indentation. Careful—pushing up on the tool could lift and break the turf, creating a bigger problem, so make sure to steer clear of that. You’ll likely need to work your way around the mark, attacking it from various angles to gently repair the damage until the divot has been filled. To finish the process and give the next player an even putting surface, use your putter to gently tamp down the area that you’ve repaired.

We’ve selected a pair of divot tools to help you show that your style is as sharp as the swing that created the mark in the first place. The William Murray Divot Tool and Ball Marker set is a true multitasker—it comes with seven tees adorned with the WMG script logo and an aluminum-bodied tool with a magnetic well to house a logo ball marker. If your concern is comfort, the Palm Golf Divot Tool features a hand-drawn design for a comfier grip when repairing ball marks. The U-shaped tool does more than provide a top-notch repairing mechanism—it doubles as rest for your club, helping you keep the grip dry. It also comes with a built-in bottle opener…which we’re sure you can find a use for.
