Located along the postcard-worthy shores of Nevada’s Lake Tahoe, Edgewood Tahoe is the kind of golf course that’ll take your breath away – not because of the altitude or because it’s exceptionally difficult (although it can be a challenging course), but because of its spectacular views filled with pine forests, snow-capped mountains, and crystal clear waters.

Home to the annual American Century Championship, a celeb golf tournament that takes place July 9-14, this family-owned, 18-hole course, which opened in 1968, was originally a cattle pasture that was eventually developed into a renowned course as well as the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, explains John McLaughlin, president and C.E.O. of Edgewood Companies, formerly known as the Park Cattle Company, after the family who has owned the land since 1896.

Keeping to its pastoral roots, the property’s LEED-certified lakefront lodge, which opened in June 2017, serves as a model for sustainability with a cooling system that uses lake water and locally sourced materials such as granite. There are also on-site charging stations for electric cars.

But the eco-friendly aspects don’t detract from the luxe quality of this 235-acre property, which features 154 guest rooms and suites, plus a host of amenities and services including complimentary yoga, a spa (with a special treatment for alpine newbies that’s designed to alleviate altitude sickness), salon, three restaurants, in-room gas fireplaces, a heated outdoor pool, plenty of firepits, and even a s’mores cart. And if you visit during the winter months, the resort offers shuttle service to nearby Heavenly Mountain, in case you want to ditch the golf clubs for ski poles.

And although the lodge is relatively young, it has already landed on several notable “best of” lists, while the golf course itself is regularly named among the top courses in the U.S.

Designed by George Fazio (with help from his nephew Tom Fazio), the course offers a choice of four sets of tees, ranging in length from 5,343 to 7,529 yards, plus picturesque holes that border the lake. It is the majestic surroundings that make Edgewood Tahoe a natural fit for TV. McLaughlin says, in addition to being the first course in Nevada to host a U.S.G.A. event, the U.S. Public Links Championship in 1980, it was also the site of the first televised U.S. Senior Open in 1985

And for the past 30 years, it has hosted the American Century Championship. Sponsored by American Century Investments and broadcast on NBC, this year’s event boasts a star-studded roster that includes Larry Fitzgerald, Charles Barkley, chef Bobby Flay, and more.
